One Subject, Three Mediums Art Challenge: Apoxie Sculpt, Paper Mache & DAS Smart Clay

This challenge was suggested to me by my sweet daughter. The subject I choose is a face. The materials I choose were paper mache, DAS Smart Clay and Apoxie Sculpt.

One Subject, Three Mediums

My latest art challenge is to create the same subject using three different mediums. For the first piece, I chose Apoxie Sculpt and made this creepy little face. Once it cured, I painted it with a weathered gray finish, added glowing red eyes, and turned it into a magnet. It was a fun way to see how much detail I could get with Apoxie Sculpt while creating something that is both spooky and useful. Now it’s time to see how a face looks in the next two mediums!

Would I make a face or a skull again with Apoxie Scuplt? Yes! Apoxie Sculpt is a great medium to work with that creates durable pieces.

The second in my One Subject, Three Mediums challenge was made with DAS Smart Clay. Unfortunately, this was my least favorite material to work with. I found it difficult to shape and get the details I was looking for, and it just wasn’t a good fit for my sculpting style. One of the goals of this challenge was to experiment with different materials, and now I know that DAS Smart Clay probably won’t be one I’ll reach for again.

In comparison to the Sculpey Polymer clay I found that the Sculpey  one was easier to work with. Altough that one would also not be a go to when I am in the mood to work with clay. I prefer air dry clay to clay that requires baking.

one subject three mediums

The thrid medium in my One Subject, Three Mediums challenge was paper mache. Things didn’t quite go as planned when my fingernail accidentally popped the balloon before it had completely dried. Instead of starting over, I finished the project anyway. The face ended up with a distorted shape, that I did not like. It may not have turned out the way I originally envisioned, but that’s part of creating art. Sometimes you work with what happens and end up with something unique.

Since I did not like it, I tossed it. Would I make a face with paper mache again? No

Of course the one I chose to use for the inprogress slide show did not turn out. LOL The rings in the first image were a tool I attemted to use to mark where not to put the strips of paper.

This challenge was a great way to compare different sculpting materials using the same subject. Apoxie Sculpt was my favorite and allowed me to create crisp details while making a functional skull magnet. Paper mache didn’t go according to plan after the balloon popped early, but the finished face ended up with a creepy, distorted look that I did not like. DAS Smart Clay was the most difficult medium for me, and I don’t see myself using it again. Even though not every project turned out exactly as planned, I enjoyed pushing myself to experiment with different materials, and that’s what this challenge was all about.

Look for my next challenge. Which is to turn a finished Acyrlic painting in to a oil painting.
