Mix and Mold Ceramic Resin Review: A Durable Alternative to Plaster of Paris
If you’ve been following my recent art challenges, you know I’ve been experimenting with different casting materials. After having mixed results with Plaster of Paris, I decided to give Mix and Mold Ceramic Resin a try. I used it to cast three adorable little dragons, and overall, I was impressed with how easy it was to work with.
My Experience
The ceramic resin was simple to mix and didn’t require any complicated steps. If you’ve ever worked with Plaster of Paris, the process will feel very familiar. It mixes up quickly and pours easily into molds.
The biggest difference came after it cured.
Compared to Plaster of Paris, the finished casts felt much stronger and more durable. My dragons had a solid, ceramic-like feel that gave me much more confidence when handling and painting them. Since one of my biggest frustrations with Plaster of Paris was how fragile it could be, this was a huge improvement.

Cons
I didn’t run into any major issues during this project.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for something stronger than Plaster of Paris for small castings, I think Mix and Mold Ceramic Resin is worth trying. It offers the same easy mixing process but produces a much more durable finished piece. After making these three dragons, I would definitely choose this over Plaster of Paris for future casting projects.
Painting the Dragons
Once cured, I painted the dragons with metallic paints in green, blue, and copper. The ceramic resin accepted the paint well, and the finished pieces came out with a smooth, sturdy finish that really showed off the details in the mold.
Once the dragons had fully cured, it was time for my favorite part thepainting! I broke out my Crayola Marker Sprayer and, shh 🤫…I’m still using my STA paint markers. LOL!
The green and blue dragon turned out exactly how I imagined it. The other one had plans of their own.
The copper dragon was actually supposed to be purple. I started spraying it with a purple marker when it suddenly stopped working. My first thought was that the batteries had died, so I changed them. Turns out the batteries were fine. The purple marker had simply dried out! So I grabbed another marker to finish the dragon. The cap was pink, so I thought, “Awesome, now I’ll have a pink dragon.” Nope! It sprayed a gorgeous metallic copper instead. 😂
I definitely wasn’t expecting to end up with a copper dragon, but honestly, I love how all three turned out. Sometimes crafting doesn’t go according to plan, and those happy accidents end up being the best part of the project.
